July 12, 2012. Things are picking up in numbers of birds. We captured 39 birds of which 31 were new birds and 8 recaptures. We either heard, captured or saw 42 species of birds in the area.

The catch of the day was the Marsh Wren. We don’t catch many here or at the K-MB banding station, even though they are our mascot!

The most unusual and sad catch of the day, was an older Song Sparrow with severe Scaly Leg (see photo). It did not spread up the tarsus but did flare the toes. Extra care in removing the bird and handling it had to be taken.

Banding with us this day was Tom Klotzbach, Kevin Eckert, Emily and Andrea Patterson, Greg Lawrence, Chita McKinney and Aggie Windig. Our next session on Monday, July 23 will traditionally be the largest influx of young birds. Marian Klik
