Saturday September 20, 2014:  51 new birds of 16 species; 13 recaps.  New species:  Winter Wren and Common Grackle.  Bird of the day:  Blackpoll Warbler with 23 new bands.  It was a lovely fall day at BBBO, as the traditional Appledore Weekend got underway.  This year, three women who assist with the Appledore banding project will be taking our fall bander training class, and two of them came to start the class a day early.  While we wish there had been more birds, we couldn’t complain about the weather.  In the end, we banded 7 species of warbler with the Blackpoll accounting for nearly half of our total birds banded!  Could it be another big Blackpoll year?  Only time will tell . . .

Katie and Andrea had a bit of excitement at the end of the day, when Katie discovered a Garter Snake sneaking around the lab table in the boathouse.  We relocated it to a better location (outside!), and it quickly crawled away.
