Friday, May 1. 49 new bands, 19 recaps; new species House Wren and Gray Catbird

The season is getting a slow start. Winds are cold and out of the north so migration is slow. We got 49 new birds to band of which 27 were Ruby-crowned Kinglets. We also recorded 19 recaptures. Western Palm, White-throated Sparrows, Hermit Thrushes, Winter Wrens, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, and Slate-colored Juncos are on their way through. Returning to the area are Field, Swamp, and Song Sparrows as well as House Wrens, Brown Thrashers, Brown Creepers and of course the American Robin. Flocks of Blue Jays, Grackles and Red-Wing Blackbirds were seen flying overhead but not one visited the nets. The winds will shift to the south soon and then the parade will begin in earnest.
